Can Employers See Proctorio Recordings?

3 min read

Only if the employer is the organization that ran the test. Proctorio says recordings can be viewed only by representatives the institution or organization approves. When a school or certification body proctors an exam, that body controls the recordings, not a future employer. When an employer uses Proctorio for its own hiring assessment, the employer is that organization, and its approved reviewers can watch the sessions. This review sits inside an employer's wider AI Candidate Evaluation process.

How access works

  • Encryption. Proctorio describes its audio, video and screen recordings as end-to-end encrypted with what it calls zero-knowledge encryption. Only the testing organization holds the decryption key, so Proctorio's own staff can't view recordings unless the organization grants access.
  • Approved reviewers. The organization decides who can decrypt and review sessions. In a university those are instructors and administrators; in a company, the people it authorizes.
  • Only what was switched on. Proctorio records video, audio or the screen only if the exam administrator enabled those options for that test.
  • Limited retention. Each organization sets its own retention period. Proctorio says recordings may stay on its servers for as little as seven days, and typically not more than a year.

What an employer reviewing a session sees

For each candidate, the reviewer gets a behavior timeline that shows suspicion levels across the attempt, color-coded red, yellow or green, plus the recorded footage and data for that session. Proctorio flags moments for review; it does not decide who cheated. A reviewer still has to watch the flagged moments and judge them.

Can a new employer see an old exam?

No. A recording made for a university course or a certification belongs to that institution's account. An employer can't request it from Proctorio, because Proctorio can't decrypt it. If a credential matters to a hiring decision, the employer verifies the credential with the issuing body instead.

What employers using Proctorio should decide up front

  1. Which monitoring options each assessment needs.
  2. Who on the hiring team may review recordings.
  3. How long recordings are kept.
  4. What candidates are told before the test.

Telling candidates what is recorded and who can see it is also how Proctorio's own disclosures work before each exam.
