Can You Redo a HireVue Video Interview? Retakes and Resets

3 min read

You can redo a HireVue video interview only if the hiring company authorizes another attempt. You cannot independently reopen a submitted answer or assume that returning to the invitation link creates a new interview.

HireVue's candidate restart guidance says candidates cannot return to a question after submitting its response. A complete retake, including restarting an in-progress interview, needs the hiring company's approval.

Three situations that are easy to confuse

Practice questions: use these to test your setup and become familiar with the format. They are separate from the answers you submit for the employer's review.

An answer before submission: follow the controls and attempt rules displayed in your interview. Do not assume another platform's rerecording policy applies to HireVue.

A submitted answer or completed interview: contact the hiring company. The candidate help guidance directs completed-interview retake requests to the employer, which can provide a new link if it approves.

How to request a retake

Find the employer's contact in the invitation, candidate portal, or careers site. State the role, the interview date, and whether the interview was completed.

If something failed technically, describe the specific problem and approximate point at which it happened. For example: “The microphone stopped capturing audio during the second response. I completed the interview but would like you to review whether a reset is appropriate.”

If you simply disliked your answer, say so honestly. The employer may decline a performance-based retake or apply a consistent policy across all candidates. Approval is not guaranteed.

Can HireVue support reset it for you?

HireVue provides the platform and technical support, but its candidate guidance says it cannot authorize interview retakes. Technical troubleshooting and permission for another hiring attempt are separate requests.

Keep the employer informed if support helps diagnose a device or connection issue. That evidence may help the employer understand the request; it does not compel a reset.

Does a weak interview mean rejection?

The employer decides how the interview fits into its process. A retake request does not establish the outcome of your application. Our guide to how employers assess a HireVue interview covers the distinction between a weak response and a final hiring decision.

For hiring teams

Define when a technical failure merits a new attempt and communicate that rule consistently. Consistent first-round interviews support structured questions and scoring; they do not authorize a reset inside HireVue.

Bottom line

Contact the hiring company to request another HireVue attempt. Submitted answers are not an editable draft, and HireVue support cannot grant hiring-stage retakes on the employer's behalf.
