A standard Verified First package should finish in one to five business days, the range Verified First calls the industry standard. Verified First says its own average turnaround is ahead of that window, and its verification searches average 42.8 hours.
The timeline by component
Database searches are the fast part. An SSN trace, a sex offender registry search and a multi-jurisdiction criminal database search return in minutes. Those results arrive while the rest of the file is still open.
County-level criminal searches are where timing varies. Some counties publish digital records and return quickly. Others need a clerk to search in person, which adds days.
Employment, education and licensing verification average 42.8 hours at Verified First. The company says an in-house team contacts employers and schools directly, rather than through a third party.
What slows a Verified First check
- A former employer or school that responds slowly
- Holiday periods, when registrar and HR offices are closed
- Records held outside the United States
- A court that requires a clerk to run the search
- Missing or mismatched information in the candidate's history
How far back the check goes
Verified First's default criminal lookback is seven years. Employers can order a 10-year or unrestricted lookback for some searches. The lookback is a setting the employer chooses, so two candidates at different companies can have different windows.
A package closes when its slowest component closes, so a fast database result does not shorten the file while a county search is still open.
What you can do
Give the employer every address for the period requested, with dates as accurate as you can make them. List employer legal names and the schools you attended exactly as they appear in records. A missing address or a former employer's trading name can send a search to the wrong place.
If you changed your name, say so. A mismatch between your current name and an old record is one of the common reasons a verification comes back unresolved.

For employers
The verification wait is where candidates take competing offers. Score and shortlist before the check starts so a slow registrar does not cost you the hire. AI Candidate Evaluation keeps that comparison on record while the file closes.
