A Universal Background Screening check typically completes in one to three business days for a standard criminal search, and three to seven business days once employment or education verification is included. As with every screening provider, the courthouse and the previous employer set the real ceiling, not the vendor.
What the timeline is made of
Criminal searches. County-level searches return quickly where the courthouse is digitised and slowly where it is not. Federal and statewide searches generally take longer than county searches.
Employment verification. Usually the slowest component. It depends on a human at the previous employer responding, or on an automated verification service returning a record.
Education verification. Fast if the registrar uses a clearinghouse; slower if a manual request is needed.
Identity and address history. Hours, and it gates everything else — an incomplete address history is the most common cause of avoidable delay.
Typical windows
- Identity and address: same day
- County criminal: one to three business days
- Federal criminal: two to five business days
- Employment verification: two to seven business days
- Education verification: one to five business days
- Driving record: same day
Why two candidates at the same company differ
They lived in different counties, worked for different employers, and had different components ordered. Turnaround is a property of the order, not the provider.
How to avoid the common delays
Give your complete address history and exact legal name. List employers under their legal entity name. Keep W-2s or pay stubs for closed employers. Respond to documentation requests the same day. If you know a former employer is unresponsive, tell the screening firm early so it can use the documentation fallback.
If it is running long
Past two weeks, a single polite check-in with the employer is reasonable. Ask which component is outstanding. If it is employment verification, you can often unblock it yourself by supplying documentation directly to the screening company.
For employers
Set expectations at offer stage, collect complete history up front, and tell candidates which components you are running. Most delays trace back to incomplete data at intake rather than to the screening vendor.
Where this fits in a hiring process
If you are the one running these checks at volume, the hard part is applying the same standard to every candidate rather than the search itself — AI candidate evaluation covers how to structure that step.
