A LinkedIn message has less room than an email, so I use it to open a conversation rather than paste a job description. I mention one relevant detail, identify the role and work, and offer a low-pressure next step. The candidate should be able to decide whether to continue without accepting a call first.
Connection request template
Hi [First Name], I noticed your work in [specific area] and would like to connect. I recruit for teams working on [relevant function], and I would be glad to share occasional role context if useful.
I keep a connection note free of a full pitch. If the person accepts, I send the role message separately and do not assume that accepting a connection means they want a call.
First message after connecting
Hi [First Name],
Thanks for connecting. Your experience with [specific project or responsibility] stood out to me. I am recruiting for a [Role] at [Company], focused on [specific outcome]. The team is [location or remote] and works with [relevant group].
I know you may not be looking, so would it be useful if I sent the role details? No pressure if the timing is not right.

Direct outreach template
Hi [First Name],
I am reaching out because of your work in [specific area]. I am hiring for a [Role] that owns [one concrete responsibility] at [Company]. The role is [location or arrangement] and reports to [manager or function].
Would you be open to a short conversation, or should I leave you to it? I can send the job details first if you prefer.

Follow-up template
Hi [First Name],
One detail that may help you decide whether this is relevant: the team is currently solving [specific challenge], and the role would lead [specific scope]. If that sounds connected to your work, I can answer questions here. If not, I will close the loop.

Message for a referral
Hi [First Name],
[Referrer Name] suggested I contact you about a [Role] opening at [Company]. The work involves [specific responsibility], which connects with your background in [relevant detail]. Would you like the role summary, or is now not a useful time?

My LinkedIn checklist
I use the candidate's first name, verify the profile before sending, and keep the message readable on a phone. I do not copy a generic paragraph into every message or ask for a resume before explaining the opportunity. I honor a request not to be contacted and record the outreach in the recruiting system.
The strongest LinkedIn message feels like a professional introduction, not an interruption disguised as personalization.
